Geothermal energy

EarthGeothermal energy

Geothermal energy is defined as heat from the Earth.

It is a clean, renewable resource that provides energy around the world in a variety of applications and resources. The heat of the earth is considered as a renewable resource because the heat emanating from the interior of the Earth is essentially limitless.

Plants

Geothermal power plants use hydrothermal resources that have two common ingredients: water (hydro) and heat (thermal). Geothermal plants require high temperature (150°C to 350°C) hydrothermal resources that may come from either dry steam wells or hot water wells. We use these resources by drilling wells into the earth and piping the steam or hot water to turbines at the surface. When the steam cools, it condenses to water and is injected back into the ground to be used over and over again.

Geothermal plantMany areas have accessible geothermal resources, especially countries along the circum-Pacific "Ring of Fire," spreading centers, continental rift zones and other hot spots.
